Three Jobs, Low to High

JobLowHigh
Tear out and replace a 400 sq ft driveway slab, 4 in$3,992$7,328
New 200 sq ft patio, 10 by 20 ft, 4 in$1,568$2,928
Tear out and replace a 4 by 50 ft walk$1,996$3,664

How we built it. Public agencies publish unit prices to size bonds on street work. They are installed prices, labor and material together. The low column uses the County of San Diego Unit Price List, July 2024. The high column uses the City of Carlsbad Unit Price List, fiscal year 2024 to 2025. A new 4 inch slab is $7.84 to $14.64 a sq ft. Removing the old one is $2.14 to $3.68. We multiplied by the size.

In Escondido, plain flatwork on your lot needs no building permit, so most patios and walks add no city fee. A new approach at the street does. It is $279 for the encroachment permit plus $911 for the approach on a residential street, or $1,190, from the City of Escondido Engineering and encroachment fee schedule, effective February 18, 2026. More in the permit guide.

Concrete by the Yard

No ready mix plant in the County posts a retail price online. The closest public number is a city contract. The City of San Diego buys from Pedroza Ready Mix under a City of San Diego ready mix supply contract with Pedroza Ready Mix, 2024. It lists $205.50 a cubic yard for 3,250 psi and $212.50 for 4,000 psi. Color in the truck adds $30 a yard.

That is a bulk rate for a big public buyer. An Escondido driveway order of about 5 yards will cost more per yard, and a small order may carry a short load charge. Ask the plant for both, and for the delivery fee to your street.

Bags and Supplies in Town

At the Home Depot, Escondido store (92029), a 90 lb bag of Quikrete concrete mix was $6.87 on October 31, 2026, with 909 in stock. The Quikrete Concrete Mix data sheet says the bag makes about 0.675 cubic feet. So one cubic yard takes 40 bags and costs $274.80 before you mix it.

SupplyPrice
#4 rebar, 10 ft$6.32
#4 rebar, 50 or more$5.37 each
Remesh sheet, 42 by 84 in$21.67
2x4 by 8 ft form board$3.95
24 in grade stakes, 12 pack$12.98
Liquid cement color, 10 oz$9.97

The bag price is from the Escondido store. The rest are Home Depot prices from the same day, and each item we checked matched at every county store. For a 400 sq ft slab, steel on an 18 inch grid is 60 ten foot bars, about $322.

Hauling Away the Old Slab

The FHWA, unit weight of normal weight concrete puts normal concrete at 145 pounds per cubic foot. A 400 sq ft slab at 4 inches is 133 cubic feet, close to 9.7 tons.

The Miramar Landfill fee schedule, July 1, 2026 charges $257 a ton for C&D debris from outside the City of San Diego, so landfilling that slab would be about $2,490. Recycling is closer to home. The City of San Diego certified C&D recycling facilities, October 2026 includes ARCOSA Crushed Concrete on Nelson Way, CMS Recycling on West Mission Road and Escondido Resource Recovery on West Washington Avenue. Call ahead for each rate.

Local Pay for Concrete Work

The BLS wages, San Diego, Chula Vista and Carlsbad area, May 2025 report lists cement masons and concrete finishers at an average of $35.73 an hour, with a median of $31.98. Construction laborers average $29.08. One day of wages for a mason and two laborers at the average is $751.12. The contractor also pays payroll tax, trucks, tools and the office, so the labor line on a bid runs higher.

What Moves an Escondido Price

  • Clay soil. The County lists expansive soil near Escondido, which can call for more base.
  • Slope on hillside lots, which can add steps or a wall.
  • Work at the curb, which brings the $1,190 permit.
  • Finish, from broom to stamped or colored.
  • Truck access, or a pump when the truck cannot reach.
  • Summer heat on pour day, which can call for an early start.
